Before arriving in Hubli, I spent considerable time reading travel blogs and guides. Reading them helped me create a tentative list of places to see and things to do. However, it did not give me an insight into the city and its people. On my second morning, instead of rushing from one attraction to another, I decided to take a walk through one of the most popular markets in Hubli. By the end of the day, I had gathered a wealth of invaluable knowledge about the city.

Hubli’s Durgad Bail gave me the most unforgettable first impression

I wandered through the busy streets of Durgad Bail, a local market, and marvelled as I watched shopkeepers set up their stalls. They displayed fresh vegetables and fruits, flowers, and spices. Customers stopped by the shops to exchange friendly greetings. I slowed down because everywhere I looked, I saw something fascinating.

Colourful wares, handcrafted home décor, and kitchen items made the place feel festive. Yet, the market did not feel overcrowded or chaotic. I was delighted by the chance to see the residents going about their daily lives with calmness and grace.

I learned the importance of conversation at Hubli

While browsing the market, I paused at different shops to ask for recommendations. The shopkeepers were kind and gave me great advice regarding the best places to eat in the region. They shared their expertise with me – the best time to arrive in the city, and places or timings to avoid. One elderly man even led me to an alley where local artisans sold their wares.

I had stumbled upon a treasure trove of traditional handicrafts that I would never have discovered if not for the recommendations of the local shopkeepers. The conversations I had with them made me feel right at home.

Hubli’s local flavours were hard to resist!

After I finished browsing the market, I was hungry and decided to try out some local delicacies. A generous local recommended some popular breakfast foods. First, I tried hot, fluffy idli with coconut chutney and sambar. It was delicious! Next, I devoured some crispy benne dosa and washed it down with fresh sugarcane juice. Before leaving, I bought some Dharwad peda to take home with me as a souvenir. Being a fan of sweets, I loved this local delicacy!

I didn’t have to worry about finding hotels in Hubli since I had reserved one before arriving in Hubli. That allowed me to explore the market without feeling hurried.

The lanes of Gandhi Chowk had equal charm in Hubli

They led me to another popular marketplace that was completely different from Durgad Bail. While the latter was known for its abundance of fresh produce, Gandhi Chowk is famous for the variety of shops. Unlike malls, every store is unique, offering clothing, jewellery, home décor, and books. Moreover, all the shops had a personal touch, as the shopkeepers delighted their customers with their welcoming demeanour.

I loved observing the locals interact with the shopkeepers. They greeted each other and engaged in friendly chats, discussing mundane things before heading off to work. Observing the residents gave me an insight into their culture and lifestyle.

I left Hubli with more than shopping bags full of souvenirs

In addition to buying some interesting souvenirs, I experienced something far more valuable than material goods. I witnessed a way of life that is not found anywhere else in the world. The market taught me about the local customs, traditions, and values. It gave me an insight into the city and its culture that no guidebook could.

Sometimes Hubli’s busiest place teaches you the most

While I imagined my previous experiences in other cities and towns, they ultimately did not influence my perception of Hubli. What made the most difference to me was visiting popular places among the locals. By doing so, I was able to experience everyday life in this amazing city. I saw and did things that I would not have done if I had stuck to the tourist spots. Thus, in addition to local attractions, I discovered the region’s cultural heritage and unique history.
